One Year On: Andrea Platania’s Journey at Carillion

It has been exactly one year since we introduced Andrea Platania as the newest member of our Commissioning Team, and what a year it has been. When Andrea joined Carillion Communications through the AVIXA Xchange programme, he brought with him a degree in Sound Design from the European Design Institute in Milan and hands-on experience in live events and art installations. Twelve months later, he has progressed from Associate Commissioning Engineer to Commissioning Engineer, reflecting his expertise in AV commissioning and audiovisual systems integration.

Finding His Rhythm in AV Commissioning

Over the past year, Andrea has developed from a newcomer to a confident, capable engineer trusted to lead projects across the UK. Through ongoing mentorship and support from the team, he has built strong technical and project management skills, steadily taking on more complex responsibilities.

Andrea has taken on challenging projects that tested his skills and expanded his expertise. These experiences have helped him become the engineer he is today: detail-driven, calm under pressure, and always striving for the best possible result.

He now visits client sites independently, travelling nationwide from London to Birmingham, and often spending multiple days on-site to see projects through from configuration to completion. When he is not out in the field, Andrea can be found in the Carillion office setting up and configuring Microsoft Teams Rooms (MTRs), ensuring everything is optimised, updated and tested before heading to the client. This preparation makes commissioning faster, smoother and more efficient on-site.

Precision Audio: Mastering Every Detail

With a background in sound design, it is no surprise that Andrea has carved out a specialism in audio systems commissioning. His role often involves collaborating closely with DSP technicians to achieve the most polished sound possible, ensuring precise mic positioning and crystal-clear audio signals across meeting and event spaces.

Working alongside programmers, Andrea ensures audio and visual systems operate in perfect harmony, creating seamless meeting and event experiences.

Certified Expertise: Crestron One Beyond

Earlier this year, Andrea completed Crestron One Beyond certification, an intensive three-day in-person training. This equips him to use AI-enabled technology that maps meeting rooms and automatically isolates participants when speaking, optimising both audio and video feeds. He now applies this to town halls, event spaces, and large meeting rooms, ensuring every meeting runs smoothly and participants can focus on connecting and communicating naturally.

Looking ahead

As Andrea looks to the year ahead, he is preparing to take on new responsibilities and continue developing in his role as Commissioning Engineer. Now fully operating independently on-site, he will continue strengthening his technical expertise and project leadership skills.

He will also soon welcome a new associate to the team, someone we are sure he will help support as they begin their journey at Carillion. This full-circle moment exemplifies Carillion Communications’ culture of teamwork and knowledge sharing.

A Year of Achievement in AV Engineering

From joining through AVIXA Xchange to becoming a certified Crestron One Beyond specialist, Andrea’s first year at Carillion has been marked by progress, learning and innovation. His journey reflects what is possible when passion, teamwork and opportunity align.

As he steps into the next stage of his career, we are proud to see how far Andrea has come and even more excited to see what he will achieve next.
