From Concert Crowd to Commissioning Engineer: Victoria’s Journey into AV

Victoria joined Carillion Communications on 2nd February 2026 after first connecting with the team at ISE 2025 in Barcelona during the AVIXA Speed Dating event. Now working as an Associate Commissioning Engineer, she’s already getting stuck into real projects, building hands-on experience, and developing the technical skills needed for a long-term career in the AV industry. Her time at Carillion has been a real eye-opener, not just for the projects she’s working on, but for the energy and support of the team around her.

What makes Victoria’s story particularly memorable is how her journey into AV began.

Like many people, she’s always loved music. But one live concert didn’t just entertain her; it completely changed her career path. Watching the show, Victoria was blown away by the scale and precision of the audiovisual production. The way sound, lighting and visuals came together so seamlessly sparked her curiosity straight away.

Instead of just enjoying the moment and moving on, she did something bold. She went and asked the crew a simple question: what do you call this job? Their answer: AV.

Suddenly, a whole industry opened up. What started as curiosity quickly turned into a clear direction. As she began researching, Victoria realised the AV industry is far more than just what you see on stage. From audio engineering and visual systems to programming, commissioning and design, there’s a huge range of career paths within professional audiovisual solutions.

Today, Victoria is taking the first steps in that journey with Carillion. She’s quickly discovered that part of the appeal of working with our team is the chance to connect with colleagues, share ideas, and learn in a fun, hands-on environment. As an Associate Commissioning Engineer, she is working closely with experienced members of the team while building her technical knowledge through both practical experience and structured training. She is currently studying towards the AVIXA CTS qualification and has already spent time on-site with senior team members, gaining exposure to different stages of project delivery.

The variety of work has been one of the highlights so far. Each project brings its own challenges and approaches depending on the client, the technology involved and the purpose of the space. Victoria describes the Carillion office as a lively, collaborative space where every question is welcomed, and no two days are the same, which mirrors the energy and teamwork she first noticed at the concert.

Victoria has recently been involved in work for Lindt Chocolate, where the project included a flexible meeting space that can be divided when needed, a communal area for staff, and a digital signage panel designed to share internal communications such as updates, weather and company events.

She’s also been able to see how different specialists contribute to a successful installation. Working alongside audio specialist colleagues has given her insight into the audio side of projects, with a stronger focus on sound, while also observing the roles played by programmers and support engineers throughout the process.

For Victoria, the biggest takeaway so far has been how collaborative the AV industry really is. Each project relies on multiple areas of expertise working together to deliver the final result. Victoria’s enthusiasm and upbeat personality fit right in at Carillion, where she’s thriving in her first work placement and excited to grow her AV career surrounded by a supportive, interactive team.

As she continues to develop her skills, she’s looking forward to learning more, building her confidence and discovering where she might ultimately specialise within the AV world.

It all started with a single concert and a simple question. Now, Victoria is part of the team creating the kind of AV experiences that first inspired her.
